Alita was born in 1915.  Alita's father was Fred Lowndes and her mother was Alice da Silva Carvalho.  Her paternal grandparents were John Steel Lowndes and Virginia Pinheiro da Silva; her maternal grandparents were Aprigio da Silva Carvalho and Elisa Pinheiro da Silva.  She was the second of four children.  She had two brothers and a sister, named Arthur, Albert and Anita.
