Athaliba was born in 1888 in Mato Grosso do Sul.  Athaliba's father was José Pereira da Rosa and his mother was Felisbina Pereira de Souza.  His paternal grandparents were Manoel Pereira da Rosa and Clara.  He was the oldest of nine children.  He had two brothers and six sisters, named José Antônio, João Batista, Geni, Saraiva?, Onorina?, Eliza, Alice and Jorgina.  He died in an accident or as a result of an injury, Atacado por Touro (ao vender Touros), at the age of 37 in 1925.1
