Hugo was born on May 31st, 1931.  Hugo's father was Mario Porto de Mattos and his mother was Maria Euphrasia Cunha Rodrigues de Mattos.  His paternal grandparents are José Bonifácio de Mattos and Maria Carlota Porto de Mattos; his maternal grandparents were Joaquim (Tio Sinhô) da Fonseca Rodrigues and Luiza Anunciada Cunha Rodrigues.  He is the fourth of eight children.  He has three brothers and four sisters, named A., Mauro, Pedro, Maria Lucia, Maria Odila, Maria Gilda and Maria Beatriz.
