Ever wondered why free software projects succeed even though there is no company driving and organizing development? Ever wonder how free software can actually be developed if there is no boss or timetable to pester programmers to ship their code? Ever wonder how quality is so high even though there isn't a specialized testing team on most projects?

I did. And I decided to base my MSc studies on finding out some answers to these questions. This survey is an important part of this process, in which I will identify and group projects according to similarities among them. Once grouped, my task is developing a set of models that can explain better what differs from project to project, and what effect these differences cause.
